Helene Schmitt is hot stuff. In this disc of violin sonatas by the nearly unknown Ignazio Albertini, the contemporary of Biber and Schmelzer comes passionately alive under her supple bow and sensitive fingers. In Schmitt's performances, the wildly virtuosic and extravagantly emotional music of Albertini sounds like it could only have been composed by a man stabbed to death in obscure circumstances. There's poise and grace in Schmitt's performances, as well elevated lyricism. But most of all there's passion: a passionate intensity of line, a passionate concentration of tone, a passionate brilliance of color, a passionate love of this fiercely expressive and violently beautiful music. Schmitt's trio of continuo players are sympathetic players and each gets his/her own sweet solo Prelude or Toccatina interspersed with Schmitt's Sonatas. Alpha's sound is tactile in its realism and its tiny but stunning reproduction of Guido Cagnacci's The Death of Cleopatra is a visual treat.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 is a very different matter. Premiered in 1931, it breathes the spirit of Myaskovsky’s melancholy manner; not surprisingly, as the Russian composer, pianist, and pedagogue was Kabalevsky’s primary teacher. Whereas later large-scale orchestral works of Kabalevsky are often terse to the point of musical insolvency, this concerto’s opening movement is leisurely discursive and occasionally complex. Splashy fireworks are abundant, but they don’t interfere with the density of argument. By way of contrast, the second movement is a series of variations that are individually attractive—with plenty of direct references, too, to Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and Rimsky-Korsakov—if too short to make much of a lasting impression. Rather than the usual, unreservedly cheerful finale, the third movement hearkens back to somber first movement material, without any optimistic resolution.

The son of a music theorist and writer, composer Rodion Shchedrin (b. 1932) was encouraged in his musical interests from a very young age. Not long after his graduation, Shchedrin began what has become one of his best-known works, the ballet The little humpbacked horse (1956). In the mid-'60s, Shchedrin started to incorporate modern sounds and techniques like tone-rows and aleatorics (chance elements) into works like his Symphony No. 2 (1962-1965) and the Piano Concerto No. 2 (1966). Since that time, Shchedrin has consistently exhibited an eclectic taste; elements of the avant-garde, neo-Classicism, folk, jazz, and pop music have all played roles in his music, which he has called "post-avant-garde."

Recorded back in 1986, and reissued several times in different forms, including a new reissue, Hasse’s Cleofide is a very odd bird. At nearly four hours, this opera features only high voices: sopranos and counter-tenors. This gives a strange tone to the work; one is used to hearing a variety of voices in Handel’s operas, which are contemporary with Cleofide. But in Cleofide it seems as though something is missing. Robert Hugill reviewed a single disc of excerpts of this opera in 2009 (review). I agree with Robert’s comments about the quality of the cast, and the variety of the singers. But with nearly four hours of music, this opera is certainly taxing. While it contains much fine music, and many attractive arias, the recitatives are even more uninteresting than usual. When watching an opera on DVD, the recitatives are important, but for recordings, I find them to be relatively useless and distracting. In addition, some of them are overly long, making for a tough listen.

It is simply the piano concerto that no pianist is willing to forgo. Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is now universally popular, a status that it has enjoyed, if not since its world premiere on 25 October 1875, when it was introduced to Boston audiences by Hans von Bülow, then at least since its triumphant performance in Paris three years later. It now seems almost grotesque that the composer was obliged to defend himself against the annihilating critique of his mentor Nikolay Rubinstein, commenting defiantly: “I won’t change a single note”.

Why does a 21-year-old pianist choose this perennial and much-performed piece for her first orchestral release? “I was 14 when I first performed Liszt’s E flat major Concerto, and 17 when I first played Tchaikovsky’s op.23. More of my memories and experiences are bound up with these two works than with any other.” One such memory is of Alice Sara Ott’s visit to Kamenka following her debut with the B flat minor Concerto in Kiev four years ago. It was here at Tchaikovsky’s sister’s country house in the Ukraine – now a museum – that in 1872 the composer was inspired to use Ukrainian folk music in works such as the Second Symphony (“Little Russian”) of 1872 and the B flat minor Piano Concerto of 1874–75.

Venturini was, in spite of his Italianate name, born a Flemish. His mixture of Italian and French style is often idosyncratic compared to Telemann and JS Bach, but his music is extremely individual and rewarding.

This is one of the most fascinating composers come to light recently, along with Graupner and Heinichen. The comparisson to Dresden is apt in the sense that basslines tend to underpin unpredictable and long themes with surprising pauses and rethorical figures. The instrumentation is also in keeping with the Dresden gusto barbarico with oboes in pairs not playing so much colla parte, but having independent and complementary themes. Recorders with small cadenzas dropping in and out of the movements is another peculiarity that adds both colour and new meaning to previously introduced themes.

Fyodor Serafimovich Druzhinin, also Fedor, (Russian: Фёдор Серафимович Дружинин, April 6, 1932 in Moscow – July 1, 2007) was a Russian (Soviet) violist, composer and music teacher. Druzhinin studied viola at the Moscow Central Music School with Nikolai Sokolov (1944–1950) and at the Moscow Conservatory with Vadim Borisovsky (1950–1957). In 1957, he won first place at the All-Union Competition of Musicians in Moscow. He replaced Borisovsky as violist of the Beethoven Quartet in 1964. From 1980, Druzhinin was the head of the viola department at the Moscow Conservatory. Among his students are many noted violists such as Yuri Bashmet, Yuri Tkanov, Alexander Bobrovsky and Svetlana Stepchenko.

Since 1970 he has been teaching at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he is University Professor of Composition.

Heinrich Biber’s Mystery Sonatas may have brought the composer to the attention of academics, especially for their thoroughgoing and imaginative exploration of scordatura, but during the last decade, many musicians have begun exploring the sonatas of 1681 as well. Anton Steck’s collection begins on familiar ground, but soon disappears in the wilds of less frequently explored repertoire. But the less familiar sonatas, like the one in E Major and the Ciacona in D Major, feature the same exuberantly fleet figuration that sparkles through the Mysteries and the 1681 sonatas. Steck and his ensemble make much of the creative possibilities of the music, the piquant timbres of Steck’s 1701 Alessandro Gagliano and a copy of Paganini’s Cannon by Tilman Muthesius sound titillating rather than merely eccentric or quizzical—they communicate in themselves rather than simply serve as means of communication.

In 1764 a couple of German musicians lodged together in London. They shared a sort of common background, for one was the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, newly arrived in town to write opera, and the other, Carl Friedrich Abel, had been Bach’s student back in Leipzig more than a decade earlier. He was in town to make his living as a composer of instrumental works and as a performer on that now-anachronistic instrument the viola da gamba. The two apparently hit it off quite well, for they soon conspired to develop the famed Bach-Abel concert series that became a fixture in the city for more than a decade and a half. Given that they also contrived to perform as well, it is not surprising that both men created a wide variety of works for their instruments, Bach on the keyboard and Abel on his gamba. Given that the latter was hardly fit to compete against larger ensembles, it of necessity was confined to smaller chamber works, which were often published for general consumption among musical cognoscenti.

J.C. Bach is justly recognized in his own right as one of the most talented composers of the 18th century. The Oboe Concerto in F major No. 2 is full of new ideas, likely written for his friend and oboist Johann Christian Fischer, and found with his other compositions in London where he died. The Larghetto is a beautiful, melodic piece with excellent phrasing and dynamics by Anthony Robson. The Flute (Premier recording) and Bassoon Concerto are well performed by Rachel Brown and Jeremy Ward, backed up by the excellent period orchestra of The Hanover Band. This is an outstanding recording of exhilarating woodwind concertos.

This Scriabin set is one of the finer offerings in Universal's Trio series. Vladimir Ashkenazy's crisp phrasing and lean orchestral sonorities contrast markedly with the lush appointments of Riccardo Muti's cycle, which relies heavily on the voluptuous sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra to make its effect. In this regard Muti scores over Ashkenazy in the First symphony, where the Russian conductor's crisp, no-nonsense approach sounds comparatively restrained (especially the highly emotive second movement). But the tables turn in Symphony No. 2. Here Ashkenazy's clarity and focus give much needed shape and rhythmic definition to this music, which tends to meander in Muti's hands. The finale is a perfect example: muscle with Ashkenazy; mush with Muti.

Alexandre Tharaud is a remarkable pianist who has assembled a far-from-conventional program of Bach transcriptions based on Italian concertos, all of which serve to frame scintillating performances of the German composer's own Italian Concerto BWV 971. In this, the major work on the disc, Tharaud's rendition must be accounted one of the most successful available. In the outer movements, he correctly avails himself of every pianistic tool at his disposal, including beautifully proportioned gradations in dynamics, to clarify the distinction between solo and tutti passages, and the result has even more structural clarity (and therefore expressive point) then most performances on harpsichord. The central andante shows Tharaud sensitive (as he is in all of these slow movements) to the need to cultivate a true cantabile style of phrasing, with ornamentation that is just that: an embellishment and not an excess of decoration that buries the long, lyrical melodic line.

What makes this recording special? The first factor is the orchestra. It is 'one to a part', which is to say, one solo violin, one first violin, one second violin one viola, one cello, one bass plus continuo (usually harpsichord and theorbe). The liner notes argue convincingly that Vivaldi probably composed the Seasons for an orchestra of virtuosi none bigger than this. But, if you aren't convinced by historical conjecture, the sound of 'one to a part' will convince you. The rustic and expressive elements make this small orchestra ideal for the subject matter. For example, Carmignola's Sony recording of the Seasons is one of the best I've heard but there are a few problems. The interpretation is too polite and not rustic enough and the orchestra is too light in the bass and thin sounding. This recording improves on these elements. Amandine Beyer is fantastic as the soloist. She is a disciple of Carmignola and while her amazing virtuosic gift may not be quite as slick, her more rustic, natural playing is certainly on par with Vivadi's music. Perhaps an overlooked aspect of the Seasons is the orchestra writing. The main failing of the Carmignola recording was on the orchestra side and the engineering of the recording. In composing his Pièces de clavecin en concerts, Rameau (1683-1764) created a grand work of chamber music, and at the same time, the first-ever piano trios. The independence of the instrumental parts achieved here far surpasses what Haydn, Mozart and even Beethoven did in their piano trios. It is not until Schubert that we meet with trio writing of comparably elaborate texture. Trio Arcangelo Corelli formed in 1984. At first they worked intensely on early Italian violin music, especially on Corelli’s sonatas, and therefore chose the great Roman master as their "patron saint." Based in Düsseldorf, they have given innumerable concerts and made radio and CD recordings.

What I really wanted was a motor scooter, if I remember correctly. But on that memorable day when I turned 13, it turned out to be something very different: a 45-rpm record, with a touching family portrait of Wolfgang, Nannerl, and Papa Leopold on the cover of the pretty little square case. The contents of that case were even more impressive: Mozart's Oboe Quartet! What wonderful music that was for me, and how beautiful the oboe sounded: open, warm, expressive, and piercing. It went straight to my childish soul. That was when I decided to start playing the oboe, and that's what I'm still doing today. Remarkable, really, that Mozart: he only lived for 35 years and he wasn't someone who immediately made an unforgettable impression when he walked into a room. In his day he was respected, in a sense he was famous. But there were composers who had more successful careers.

Arcangelo Corelli's remarkable reputation, established during his lifetime and maintained ever since, is based almost exclusively on his six published collections of works: the Trio Sonatas, Opp.1-4, the Concerti grossi, Op.6, and the twelve violin sonatas recorded here. Born in 1653 into a family of prosperous landowners, and trained as a violinist in Bologna, by his mid-twenties Corelli was in Rome and there rose rapidly to the peak of his profession. Born in Osaka, raised in Paris, educated at the Conservatoire National in Paris, and a student of Tatiana Nikolayeva and Alfred Brendel, Mari Kodama certainly has a distinctive pedigree. And with this, her fourth disc in a planned cycle of all Beethoven's sonatas, Kodama makes her bid to compete with her illustrious teachers. But while one cannot fault her polished technique or emotional playing, Kodama's Beethoven is not yet ready to join benchmark recordings by Schnabel, Kempff, Brendel, and others on the top shelf. Kodama's chosen repertoire is taken from the earliest of Beethoven's published sonatas, the three from Opus 2, but she plays them with an interpretive weight more appropriate to the more substantial later sonatas. The opening F minor Sonata has the relentless strength of the Tempest Sonata in its closing Prestissimo, the central A major Sonata has the unflagging intensity of the Appassionata Sonata in its central Largo, and the closing C major Sonata has the emotional weight of the Waldstein Sonata, especially in its ecstatic conclusion. These are fine qualities on the surface, but the relatively light content of the early sonatas does not yield them naturally, and Kodama appears to be reaching to create weight and solemnity where elegance and wit might be more appropriate. Any new compilation CD starring Yo-Yo Ma is certain to please. This master of the cello takes the listener through so many types of music that the ear and mind never tire. The present selection is billed as a sort of "musical autobiography," and, indeed, it gives us a tour of Ma's musical life. The Silk Road Project is represented by Zhao's "Swallow Song," with its eerie, fascinating soundscape (specially re-recorded for this CD). We also accompany Ma on his excursions into the world of the baroque cello with Vivaldi or of the Finnish folk song (by Mamiya, a first recording). There are Gershwin's languid Second Prelude, with its intimations of the song "Summertime," and an all-new recording of a nine-minute heart-breaker by Astor Piazzolla ("Soledad"). Ma also gives us more familiar Brahms, Franck, and Saint-Saens. The compilation's mellow 65 minutes offer relaxing, beautiful music, all exquisitely played. I saw the OperaBabes at Durham Gala last night. Never heard of them before, didn't buy a programme and had no idea what to expect. Hadn't even read the leaflet; just fancied a night out. As soon as the curtain opened and the lights and drums blasted out, I knew I was in for a treat. There are touches of Malcolm McLaren's Carmen (1984) in their work. A delicious fusion of opera, rock, choreography, and humour. A blend that appeals to me. I could see that the classical purist might be a bit sniffy about what they have done to the classics but their interpretations and performances are truly joyous to behold. I queued up at the end of the show to get my CD signed and now I want more.
